Background of the Study

Digital payment platforms have revolutionized the way governments collect and manage revenue, reducing reliance on cash and enhancing efficiency in financial transactions. Remita, a popular digital payment platform used by the Nigerian government, has become a critical tool in centralizing revenue collection across federal, state, and local government agencies. It allows for the secure, efficient, and transparent collection of taxes, fees, and other government revenues (Adeyemi & Ibrahim, 2023).

Despite its adoption, challenges such as fraud, delays, and underreporting still affect the effectiveness of digital payment systems in Nigerian government accounting. This study evaluates the effectiveness of Remita in improving revenue collection processes and its impact on government financial management.

Statement of the Problem

Although digital payment platforms such as Remita have been widely adopted in Nigerian government revenue collection, issues such as system downtime, insufficient integration with existing accounting systems, and limited access in rural areas continue to limit their full potential. These challenges impede the achievement of a fully transparent and efficient revenue collection system (Abiola et al., 2024).

This study examines the role of Remita in Nigerian government accounting, focusing on its effectiveness, challenges, and the overall impact on financial management and transparency.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of Remita in improving revenue collection for the Nigerian government.
  2. To assess the impact of Remita on government financial transparency and accountability.
  3. To identify the challenges and propose solutions for optimizing the use of Remita in Nigerian government accounting.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is Remita in improving revenue collection for the Nigerian government?
  2. What impact has Remita had on financial transparency and accountability in Nigerian government accounting?
  3. What challenges affect the full implementation of Remita in government accounting, and how can they be overcome?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Remita significantly improves revenue collection efficiency for the Nigerian government.
  2. Remita has a positive impact on financial transparency and accountability in Nigerian government accounting.
  3. Challenges such as system downtime and limited access in rural areas hinder the full potential of Remita in government accounting.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study evaluates the use of Remita in government revenue collection between 2015 and 2025. It focuses on its implementation at federal and state levels and examines its integration with other accounting systems. Limitations include potential biases in responses from government officials and the lack of comprehensive data on system performance.
